By the end of the course, you will be able to:

• deliver a two hour walking tour of the Old Town (Royal Mile of Edinburgh)
• deliver a short city tour by coach (1 - 2 hours)
• become a member of the Edinburgh Tourist Guides Association (on successful completion of the course and payment of membership fees)
• identify good guiding practice and etiquette

This course will cover:

• history of the Old Town of Edinburgh
• brief history of the New Town
• brief history of Edinburgh Castle
• brief history of Palace of Holyroodhouse
• geology of Edinburgh
• practical guiding skills

The course is a mixture of tutor input, group discussion and individual presentations as well as practical guiding experience in the Old Town.

The focus will be on gaining knowledge of the Old Town of Edinburgh and the skills required to lead a group by foot or on a coach.  It will also focus on the practicalities of manoeuvring groups of people in the Old Town and the importance of itineraries.

Participants will also learn how to book clients into hotels, procedures for meeting clients at the airport or railway station and what to do in the event of an incident.

Successful completion of the course will allow participants to join the Edinburgh Tourist Guides Association which provides Guides with insurance, booking services and advertising.

This course runs for two evenings (Tuesdays and Thursdays) per week over eight weeks, plus four Saturdays.

Course commences Tuesday 2nd March.  The Saturday training days are 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th April.

There are no specific entry requirements.

This course is suitable for anyone who has an interest in tour guiding, specifically in the Old Town of Edinburgh.

This course is the Foundation Course for Guiding in Edinburgh.
