Managing Conflict

Aim

This course is aimed at first line managers who have responsibility for managing people and who would like to further develop their skills in managing conflict in the workplace, dealing with two or more different views.

Objectives

  • Identify how to encourage / develop a positive working relationship between all team members and also between team members and the line manager
  • Identify the types of conflict that can exist in the workplace and the roles and responsibilities of the line manager and team member during situations involving negative conflict
  • Identify and understand techniques for anticipating conflict and effectively managing situations to positively resolve situations
  • Consider the possible causes of conflict and the indications that negative conflict is impacting individuals and the workplace
  • Identify effective techniques / ways of handling conflict within the team

Through initial small theoretical inputs and handout material for reflection, students will be assisted in their understanding of key components and how they impact on practice. Individuals will be assisted in their understanding and familiarity through small group discussions and self reflective questionnaire analysis. Feedback to individual students will be through tutor interaction and group facilitation.

Course Content

  • Conflict in the workplace, the possible causes of conflict and exploration of the ways that negative conflict is impacting on individuals and the workplace
  • Ways of developing and encouraging a positive working relationship between team members and line manager.
  • Types of conflict and roles and responsibilities of team members and line manager.
  • Exploration and techniques and ways of anticipating conflict and effectively managing situations effectively. 
  • Understanding and utilising effective techniques and ways of handling conflict within the team

The course will utilise a variety of training approaches including, questionnaires, self assessment, case studies, small group discussions, role play and lecturettes with accompanying handouts.

This course does not contain a formal assessment.
