Safe Manual Handling
Aim
This course will provide information and guidance for recognizing and assessing and controlling manual handling risks in their workplace. It will provide an understanding of current health and safety legislation regarding safe manual handling.
Objectives
On successful completion of the course, participants will:
- understand and operate within current health and safety legislation regarding safe manual handling
- recognise and assess hazards in manual handling operations
- implement a control strategy for minimising risk by using safe manual handling techniques
Course Content
The course (standard) will cover:
- Introduction
- Review of the Regulations
- The structure of the spine
- The role of muscle and connective tissue
- Common back injuries and their causes
- Principles of good movement
- Types of manual handling injuries
- Safe lifting techniques
- Risk assessment for manual handling
Other issues of safe manual handling can be covered if required, for example:
- Reporting systems
- Working safely
- Managing safely
Assessment
The course is uses a combination of delivery methods including tutor led sessions, video presentations and case studies. The course is interactive and uses a human skeleton to demonstrate issues that arise. A course booklet and checklist are provided to help in the learning and for its application to the workplace.
