IOSH Working Safely

Aim

This course will provide staff with a basic appreciation of the importance of workplace health and safety and give information on health and safety hazards.  It will also provide an understanding of responsibilities specified by health and safety legislation and will facilitate the development of safe working behaviour.

 

Objectives

On successful completion of this course and an assessment, the participant will be awarded an IOSH Certificate.  The participant will:

  • be able to identify common hazards present in the workplace
  •  be aware of factors that constitute a satisfactory working environment
  • understand the main reasons for injury or ill health at  work
  • appreciate how his/her actions may endanger self or fellow workers passing through the workplace
  • understand the meaning of a “safe system of work” and the importance of adhering to such systems
  • appreciate the importance of attitude to risk, and of physical and psychological limitations as contributory factors in accidents
  • understand the role of safety inspectors in preventing injuries 

Course Content

The course will cover:

  • Concept of ‘working safely’ 
  • Hazard, risk and risk control
  • Commonly occurring hazards and risks, Fire, Electricity, Work Equipment, People Movement, Vehicles, Poor Housekeeping, Manual Handling, Display Screen Equipment, Noise, Chemicals and Substances
  • Safety Management Systems

Assessment

The course is assessed in the form of multiple choice and short questions.  A certificate is awarded when the course study is concluded and the assessment is completed satisfactorily.

 This course consists of lectures, discussions and tutorial sessions, supported by a range of video materials.

This course is suitable for staff in any organisation, including:

 

  • trainees
  • office and non-industrial process operators
  • machine and process operators
  •  first line supervisors who have had no formal health and safety training
  • Ideally, the course should form part of an induction training programme but it can also meet the needs of those currently in employment.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements although experience of health and safety issues and working at a strategic level would be desirable.
