Training Requirement

A training programme was required to improve safe working practices, raise awareness of health and safety to all 64 staff at Fife Joinery over a period of eight months.  The training was to cover not just their health and safety professionals but to all employees and be diverse in breadth and depth to produce a positive impact on the health and safety of the company as a whole.

Training Solution

SCE Enterprise tutors in partnership with the client discussed their training needs, had a tour of the premises, observed equipment in use, the processes in operation and the conditions in which the work took place.

A holistic approach was taken to allow for any difficulties learners might have with confidence, literacy or innumeracy issues as many will not have undertaken any learning for long periods and would require guidance and support to assist them.

SCE Enterprise was responsible for providing all the resources in terms of materials and staffing to carry out all duties required such as programme management, review, assessment of learning and evaluation of satisfaction and outcomes.

The programme was delivered under the quality systems of SCE Enterprise and those laid down by the Awarding Bodies (NEBOSH and IOSH).  The courses delivered were:

Training Results

The learning was evaluated using the Kirkpatrick Model where the learning was assessed by performance criteria specified by the Awarding Bodies.

On research conducted with the participants 95% strongly agreed or agreed the training met their learning objectives.  There was also a significant drop in the accident rate and severity since the training was conducted:

In the year before and after the training the number of one day accidents decreased from 11 to one and the number of RIDDOR accidents decreased from six to one showing an improvement in health and safety practices.

Accidents reported increased by 52% demonstrating increased awareness and reporting.

The reduction in accidents equates to a saving in active work time from 40 days to four days.

Gus Speake, Health and Safety Manager at Velux said:
