Tornado Storage Solutions - Electrical Awareness Training

Tornado Storage Solutions supplies automated storage solutions which are developed and implemented as an innovative and dynamic solution for the retail market. The company installs, commissions, services and repairs all types of material handling equipment and is now a leading provider of advanced storage solutions on a worldwide scale. Tornado Storage Solutions currently works with a number of high profile clients including IKEA, Johnson Security and Play.com.

Training Requirement

Dave Scott, Technical Manager at Tornado Storage Solutions, had a number of set-up meetings with SCE Enterprise staff to discuss the company's need for a programme of electrical competence training for some key members of staff.

The company primarily employs engineers who use a broad set of skills including mechanical, IT and control knowledge on a daily basis. In view of the fact that these staff members all work directly with electricity, the company felt that the health and safety issues surrounding the use of electricity needed to be reinforced. The training, therefore, was designed to give the staff who attended the session a broad awareness of the electrical issues within their roles.

Training Solution

Stevenson College Edinburgh lecturer Craig Smith designed a 3 day programme for Tornado Storage Solutions' staff. The programme covered:

  • Assessment of Safe Working Practices (Health and Safety)
  • Safe Isolation
  • Basic and Fault Protection
  • Overview of Electrical Testing
  • Basic Fault Finding/Use of Instruments

The programme was carefully designed by Craig to accommodate the needs of the students, none of whom were professionals in the electrical field.

Training Result

SCE Enterprise was delighted to receive very positive feedback from Tornado Storage Solutions about the preparation for the training, the sessions themselves and the impact the training has had on the company on a day to day level.

Mr Scott was keen to highlight the benefits to him of the set up meetings. He commented: "Meeting in person to discuss the training need puts a very personal touch on the bespoke service SCE Enterprise offers."

Speaking about the company's need for the training, Mr Scott goes on to explain: "It is unusual to have people who are competent in every field.  The training provided by SCE Enterprise has helped us increase the electrical competence across the board because this is where we see the highest possible risk of injury to the staff occurring.  Staff members who are unfamiliar with electrical systems can, over time, become complacent with the dangers electrics present and that is when accidents happen."

Since the training session at SCE Enterprise in early November 2011, Tornado Storage Solutions has reported seeing its staff adopt a more professional method of working. This is, in part, is attributed to the increase in staff confidence as a result of the training. Mr Scott feels that it is this confidence which the staff display in customer facing situations that is helping to portray the company in a much better manner than was seen previously.
